Introducing the freshmen
With the beginning of the basketball practices this new season BruinBlitz.com will introduce the five freshmen who are joining the team this year. These freshmen are all highly ranked by Rivals.com and will be counted on to contribute many minutes during this season. UCLA's 2009 recruiting class is ranked in the top ten by everyone. Following is an analysis of these five fine players and how they will fit into the team this season. They are listed in alphabetical order by last name. Tyler Honeycutt: Honeycutt is a 6-9 multi-position player who is slender, very quick and super bouncy. He has an outstanding ability to jump sky-high, land and go back up just as high and quickly. Honeycutt also has great hands and a sharp shooting touch from all over. He was not a highly rated junior in high school until he shot up to around 6-8 and started showing his super jumping ability and good scoring. He runs the floor extremely well and has can dribble full speed nicely. He also passes the rock accurately and sees the floor like a point guard. Honeycutt's main game is down on the blocks, however, where he dominates the key and the boards with his quick high hops and aggressive game.
A lot of scouts think Honeycutt will be the freshman who wins the most minutes this season, perhaps being the one freshman who gets a starting spot at the two or the three. He will probably get his minutes at the three with his scoring, shot blocking and boarding ability in the key. Honeycutt will be a lot of fun to watch this season as he is a superior talent and a great young man. He was hurt all summer due to a back injury he sustained in an all-star game out in Ontario last spring. It is a chronic problem with his lowest vertebrae which will never heal but now that it has been accurately diagnosed will not impede his game at all in the future. Wearing No. 23, look for great things from Honeycutt in the coming seasons.
