Notes: Born to a 16-year-old mother and was forced to help raise six younger siblings in a dangerous area where he encountered multiple instances of violence, both domestic and outside the house. Was a youth baseball standout and also played basketball as a Virginia prep, in addition to starring as a do-everything football player. Missed four games his junior season after suffering a broken leg. Redshirted in 2007 and was named Scout Team Offensive Player of the Year. Played in all 13 games in '08, starting five of the final six games at the "X" receiver, and gained a school-record 21.3 yards per touch - recorded 24 receptions for 336 yards (14.0-yard average) and two touchdowns with 42 kickoff returns for 1,089 yards (25.9) and one TD. In '09, was the Terps' leading receiver and Offensive MVP, set a UM single-season all-purpose yardage record (2,192, second in Atlantic Coast Conference history) and broke his own ACC single-season kickoff-return yardage record. Started 10-of-12 games at the "X" receiver in '09 (non-starts were due to formation) and produced 61-824-5 (13.5) receiving and 51-1,309-2 (25.7) on kickoff returns. Added 11 rushes for 59 yards (5.4) with one TD. Played the "Z" receiver in '10 when he started 12-of-13 games and posted 67-1,055-12 (15.7) receiving with 30-585 (19.5) on kickoff returns. His 2,983 kickoff-return yards are the most in ACC history. Team captain. Graduated.
Positives: Outstanding acceleration and straight-line speed - displays a knack for making plays downfield (tracks well over his shoulder). Able to sink his hips. Competes and concentrates in traffic. Adjusts to throws and shows good short-area burst to get upfield suddenly. Shifty and slippery after the catch. Willing blocker. Explosive athlete with very good weight-room strength - posted a 41-inch vertical leap at the Combine. Very productive as a receiver and kickoff returner. Exceptional character.
Negatives: Has small hands. Does not play as fast as he times. Tight-hipped and straight-linish - too easily rerouted and erased at the line of scrimmage. Sticks some when coming out of breaks. Bit of a heel striker and does not get great leg extension. Ran simple routes. Body-catches too many throws. Average run strength. Disappears for stretches.
Summary: Good-sized, productive, motivated "X" receiver with starter-caliber measurables and a diverse skill set that enables him to make some big plays vertically, after the catch and as a kickoff returner. Is not a finished product but is already a success story, having overcome great adversity, and is the type of player to root for. Would be an ideal No. 2 or No. 3 receiver and primary return man.
