Notes: Four brothers played college football. Jimmy was a receiver-cornerback (also returned punts) who played basketball and ran track as a California prep. Redshirted in 2006. Primarily a special-teams player in '07, was credited with four tackles, one pass breakup and one interception (31-yard TD against Nebraska) in 13 games. Played 10 games in '08, starting the final three at right cornerback, and tallied 39-5-0 with one tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Missed the first two games while nursing a back bruise. Was arrested twice for underage alcohol possession as an underclassman. Started all 24 games at the RCB spot his final two seasons - totaled 70-10-2 with three tackles for loss and one forced fumble in '09 and 70-5-0 with two tackles for loss and a forced fumble in '10. Sustained a concussion against Baylor as a senior. Did not run the 60-yard shuttle at the Combine because of tightness in both knees.
Positives: Looks every bit the part - has on-field stature, long arms and an outstanding size-speed ratio. Long and strong-handed to press - can ride receivers out of bounds when he wants to. Athletic and light on his feet. Terrific balance and body control. Patient in his pedal with flexible hips. Plants and drives efficiently. Keys and reacts quickly. Jumps routes. Matched up well against Georgia WR A.J. Green, and quarterbacks tended to throw away from him. Was not thrown at often. Bench-pressed 225 pounds 24 times.
Negatives: Inconsistent focus. Questionable compete level. Does not play with consistent physicality or demonstrate urgency in his play. Average instincts. Lacks elite acceleration and could be stressed by burners. Average stop-and-go burst. Inexperienced in zone. Does not set a hard edge in run support and was run out of bounds against Missouri. Struggles to break down and tackle in space. Has a posse of hangers-on, an inflated opinion of himself and thinks he already has arrived. Character needs to be investigated - repeatedly has made poor decisions, has a documented failed drug test, admitted to failing two at the Combine, and already changed agents very early in the process. Not accountable. Does not study the game and always bordered on staying eligible academically. Too easily influenced and will require a strong, veteran locker-room presence to fall in line.
Summary: A first-round pick based on measurables, but risk-reward ratio, intermittent intensity and suspect intangibles do not justify such a lofty investment. Is a physical prototype for a press corner, boasting length, speed, athleticism and fluidity, but his inconsistent play might never disappear. Finesse temperament will turn some teams off and he will have to allay fears that a big payday will only amplify underachiever traits. Compares favorably to Falcons 2006 second-round pick Jimmy Williams, who flamed out of the league nearly as fast as he came in. Has big-time bust potential.
