Bruins face Waves in Pauley

The UCLA Bruins (1-1) will face the Pepperdine Waves (1-2) at 8:00 Monday night in Pauley Pavilion. In their most recent game Pepperdine defeated Cal State San Bernardino 72-70 last Friday night. Previously they lost to Long Beach State 67-58 and Pacific 67-64 in double overtime.

The Waves are coached by Tom Asbury who is in his second stint at Pepperdine. Asbury was the Wave's head coach from 1989-94 and went 125-59 (.679) during that time. Coach Asbury was also at Kansas State for six seasons, including the 1998-99 season when Kansas State led the nation in field goal percentage defense. Most recently he was an assistant coach for four seasons at Alabama under Marc Gottfried before he returned to Pepperdine in mid season last February. Asbury is a highly respected coach who, in the Ben Howland mode, emphasizes defense and rebounding.

The 09-10 Waves are team that may even be younger than UCLA. Their leading scorer is 6-3 sophomore guard Keion Bell who is averaging 21 points per game (ppg). Bell is a great penetrator and excellent defender.

The second leading scorer is 6-6 sophomore guard Dane Suttle Jr. who is the son of Pepperdine's all-time leading scorer. Suttle has potential to be an outstanding wing player.
