Notes from the Adidas Summer Kickoff Classic

The Adidas Summer Kickoff Classic took place this weekend and was highlighted by another solid match-up between the Minnesota Select Stars and Chris Carr's 43 Hoops 16s. Jordan Taylor and David Hanson had big games in the 72-69 victory as Taylor scored 20 points and dished out seven assists. In the 17s title game, Preston Whitaker's group rolled through All Iowa Attack in the title game as they went on a 38-2 run in the middle of the contest.

For the second time this year, Taylor and his Select Star group finished off 43 Hoops and it was Taylor's play in the second half that made the difference. He simply makes few mistakes, Jordan is completely steady in the clutch, he made timely three-pointers and dished out some outstanding assists in a second half run of the title game. What makes him such a solid point is the fact that he is a very fundamentally sound player. He recently picked up his first offer and it was from Wisconsin-Green Bay. During the calling period, five major schools called and things are really just getting started for this talented 2008 guard prospect.

Taylor is one of Minnesota's elite point guards as is Preston Whitaker from St. Cloud Apollo and 43 Hoops 17s. Whitaker is a playmaker defensively because his long arms, solid timing and intense defense cause a number of steals that often result in fast breaks in the other direction. His jumper looks like it gets better every game and few can turn on the jets from medium to full to go to the hole like Preston. He has what I would call confident handles and his crossover can be jaw dropping and I saw it crumple a defender last weekend. The three schools contacting him the most right now are St Cloud State, North Dakota State and Northern Iowa.
